Fun in the Woods

We are finally getting fall weather here and loving every second! It’s so nice to finally feel like fall. And that’s a lot coming from a girl who lives for Texas summers. But, this is Texas after all and the weather is guaranteed to change before we know it. So, we took advantage and headed out to our family’s property for the weekend. It’s just a couple of hours north of Houston and the perfect getaway for a little relaxation.

My husband has so many wonderful memories going up there as a kid. We visit every chance we get and love that we’re creating memories with our kids now too. We explored new trails, ate entirely too many smores and collected pinecones which I can’t wait to add a few drops of Christmas Spirit to and stick around the house or hang on our Christmas tree. PS, add a pretty bow and pinecones with oils make the perfect Christmas gift for friends and neighbors.

Before we left, I whipped up a bug spray to keep the critters away while we play and explore. The property earned the nickname the Tick Farm years ago because, you guessed it, ticks were everywhere. And every time they visited, someone would find a tick on them somewhere. I can tell you that’s still true and we’ve found them in the most awkward of places. Plus, it’s the woods — there are all kinds of things crawling around!

Since we’ve been taking the kids, I have been psycho about keeping bugs off of them. But traditional bug spray always leaves a sticky, stinky film and it’s chocked full of chemicals that can cause a whole list of health issues. No, thanks! So, I made my own — 100% natural, smells great, leaves zero gross residue and actually works!

Salt Air + Cedar | DIY Bug Spray

Bug Off Spray // In a 2oz spray bottle, fill 3/4 with distilled water and 1/4 with witch hazel. Then, add: 5 drops Purification + 5 drops Thieves + 5 drops Lavender + 3 drops Peppermint and shake, shake, shake! If you already have a premium starter kit, then you already have all these oils!

I like to use Purification since it’s already a blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Tea Tree & Myrtle. Thieves contains Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary — all are fabulous at repelling bugs. Also, you could totally do 5 drops of peppermint to keep it even, but I used this spray on the entire family and didn’t want too much on the baby. Yes, he’s two and a big boy, but nonetheless, you can add as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. I sprayed everyone down every two-ish hours and it worked like a charm!

What fun things do you have planned to round out this fall? I’d love to hear them! XO
